What is an allergic reaction?

An allergy is your body’s immune system response to a normally nonthreatening substance, such as dust, mold, or pet dander. This overreaction, or hypersensitivity to normal items (called allergens), is called an allergic reaction. It can produce symptoms that range from a runny nose and sneezing to asthma attacks and anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening.

Our immune system is designed to help fight off bad things in our bodies, like infections and viruses. If you have an allergy to pollen, your immune system sees the pollen as a bad thing that it has to fight against. Reactions (symptoms of allergies) can affect the nose, sinuses, lungs, throat, and skin.

Because allergic reactions can affect your breathing and ability to sleep and rest properly, it is important to get a diagnosis and treatment plan to help manage your allergies.

What are your allergic triggers? This is important to know because there are many types of allergens, and they can be as individual as you are. This requires testing to figure out exactly what causes your symptoms.
